PETA Makes Plans to Demonstrate at the Capitol

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which is better known simply as PETA, has long been trying to spread the word about veganism.  As such, the organization’s Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs, Bruce Friedrich, has been speaking in front of groups around the country in order to educate them about the global impact of eating meat.  More specifically, he has been stressing how veganism can help reduce famine as well as the wasteful use of precious fossil fuels.

In an effort to draw attention to the importance of veganism and vegetarianism, the organization is currently working to put on a demonstration on the steps of the Capitol.  With all of the attention the H1N1, or swine flu, virus has been receiving, the organization has submitted an application to set up a hog-farm on the Capitol’s steps.  This display is to include 3500 gallons of pig manure and urine with a fan blowing the scent around.  It is also to include undercover footage of what takes place at hog farms.  In this way, the organization hopes to show the cruelty that takes place on the farms while also demonstrating the conditions on these farms that could have helped lead to the spread of swine flu.

What are your thoughts regarding this display?  Do you think it will be successful at convincing people to become vegans or vegetarians?  Do you think the Capitol Police will accept the application for this display?  With the government’s recent attempts to get away from calling it “swine flu” because of the effects it is having on the pork industry, PETA may not be successful with its application.  At the same time, one of the things that makes our country great is our right to demonstrate peacefully.  It will be interesting to see if this demonstration actually makes it to the Capitol.
